We could say right now that the world of handheld consoles is being ruled by Nintendo and Valve with the latter being the better one in terms of performance. However, other companies aren’t strangers when it comes to this type of platform. If you remember, Sony launched in the past two handheld consoles, the PSP and PS Vita. Both were great and had some fantastic exclusives like Final Fantasy Tactics but sadly, we haven’t had any new consoles so far. Well, according to rumors, the new handheld console from Sony is already in the works.
Sony could be working on a new handheld console that requires the PS5 to work
Recent information says that the possible console might not be similar to the PS Vita. The rumors say that this console dubbed the “Q Lite” right now, will require the PS5 to work as it’ll only use the Remote Play feature. If this is true, people will be very disappointed. Even with this information, some users claim that this is a very bad idea since we can already try the Remote Play app on other devices. Some gamers were really hoping for a console that would compete against the Steam Deck but it seems that is not the case. So far, we only have little information about some of the features the console might have. Here they are:
- Adapting Steaming up to 1080p and 60 FPS
- It will require a constant internet connection
- Shaped like a PS5 controller but with an 8-inch LCD touchscreen
- It’ll have adaptive triggers and haptic feedback
- Scheduled to release before the PS5 Pro
I am traveling to Super Nintendo World, but I see the reports about a potential Vita 2, and I would definitely scope down those expectations. I've only ever heard about a cloud-streaming handheld.

Yet, this is early information and things might change. Usually, while leaks and rumors are bad, they also serve to make companies realize they are making a mistake. In some cases, things change and in some, they don’t. Given how these rumors about the new handheld console from Sony are apparently true, we are not sure how well it’ll sell out there. If it is only a new piece of hardware that lets you use Remote Play, people might pass on it. However, if there are more features like cloud gaming or something similar to what the Steam Deck does, that’ll be great. But, as always, let’s wait for any official news and hope that whatever Sony is planning turns out to be great.
