Last year we learned all about Hazel and her adventures through the Bayou to find her mother after a huge hurricane struck and tore them apart in the reveal trailer for South of Midnight. Today, however, we got a deeper look at the story of Hazel and her magical abilities at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, and to say that it was absolutely beautiful would be an understatement.
This time around, we got a peek at some gameplay from South of Midnight, and it didn’t disappoint. We get to check out Hazel’s interaction with Catfish, who teaches her a bit about herself and what it means to be a Weaver, as well as Two-Toed Tom, a massive albino alligator who has his heart set on attacking anything who enters his hunting grounds. Luckily, Catfish and Hazel are smarter than Two-Toed Tom and they device a plan to ring a nearby church bell to make Tom flee.
As Hazel makes her way over to the church to ring the bell, we get to take a peek at how she uses her powers as a Weaver to travel through the water quickly and silently, and even take down a powerful Brute Haint that threatens her mission to save her mom. In the process, she uses her abilities to weaken the psychic energy and eventually Unravel the Haint, defeating it, and dispelling the darkness so that life can come back into the plants around her.
The music, the quirky dialogue, the graphics, and even the smooth game mechanics all speak to the unique and intriguing spin that Compulsion Games gave South of Midnight.
