Everybody get up because Space Jam 2 has just been officially announced! The news was announced earlier today and it’s all over social media. The original Space Jam came out on November 15th, 1996. Space Jam 2 is set to star Lebron James as the main basketball player, similar to Micheal Jordan in the original. However, this isn’t just about having a powerhouse on the court.
“Black Panther” director, Ryan Coogler will be the Producer of the Space Jam sequel. This will be his first project since directing Marvel’s Black Panther, which smashed box office records, grossing $218 million dollars in just its opening weekend. Lebron James has high hopes for working with Coogler and he says
“I loved his vision,”
This is according to an article on Hollywoodreporter.com. According to the same article, Terrance Nance, the creator of HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness will be directing the next Space Jam. The Space Jam sequel will begin production sometime in 2019 during the NBA off-season.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Space Jam without our favorite Looney Tunes characters on the court. In the image released during the announcement, you can tell that Bugs Bunny will make a return. However, there is no official word as to who will be returning from the original movie. The fans would be disappointed if all the cartoon characters didn’t make a return.
People definitely age but cartoon characters can be drawn in again. As for the human actors, this will be Lebron James’ first starring role since Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck. Lebron James is the star of Space Jam 2 but that doesn’t count Micheal Jordan out just yet.
No official word has been said about if he’d make an appearance, but the original Space Jam is still the highest grossing basketball movie of all time. The movie took in about $250 million worldwide.
I guess we’ll have to see if the sequel can shoot its shot. For more Space Jam news keep it locked on TheNerdStash.
