On November 10, Space Jam celebrates its 20-year anniversary release date. And what better way to celebrate than re-watching the film in a cushy theater, surrounded by other appreciators of Joe Pytka’s genius?
That’s right. For a limited time, Space Jam will return to theaters next month. The live action/animated basketball comedy will be available for viewing pleasure on Sunday, November 13 and Wednesday, November 16. Over 400 theaters will be participating in the event.
Space Jam is an arguably brilliant combination of animated characters and professional basketball players in a lighthearted comedy. The film released in 1996, starring Michael Jordan and other such notable players as Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Patrick Ewing. Jordan works alongside Bill Murray and Bugs Bunny’s Looney Tunes gang to defeat a team of aliens. These aliens have obtained the basketball prowess of the other NBA stars (Bird, Barkley, etc.), so Bugs and friends turn to Michael Jordan for help.
There is also a sequel in the works for this classic. Justin Lin, who recently worked on Star Trek Beyond, will be heading this project. As for the replacement for Michael Jordan’s leading role, it seems LeBron James will fill that spot. Many fans are skeptical the sequel will not be nearly as great. However, it has been over 20 years since Space Jam debuted. Warner Bros. is itching for another film in the franchise. And with Lin at the helm, who knows? The sequel could turn out to be another classic.
