Nicki Minaj’s surprise appearance at a Texas rocket launch turned an already chaotic night into one of the internet’s strangest celebrity crossovers, after SpaceX was forced to scrub the debut launch of its upgraded Starship V3 rocket just seconds before liftoff. Because of the scrubbed launch, Minaj’s involvement drew more attention online for its irony, especially after her appearance at the Texas Starbase had already gone viral.
Musk’s company attempted to launch the massive spacecraft Thursday evening from its Starbase facility in South Texas, but technical problems stopped the countdown at around T-minus 40 seconds. Engineers reportedly could not resolve the issue before fuel temperatures rose beyond acceptable launch conditions, forcing the launch to be postponed until at least Friday night.
The failed attempt immediately sparked jokes online because Minaj, whose 2012 hit song Starships became a global anthem, had been invited to witness the historic launch in person. Space fans and social media users quickly flooded X with memes about the universe “refusing” to let “Starships” finally fly.
During the Texas Starbase livestream, Minaj appeared excited while wearing a SpaceX Starship T-shirt and calling the event “historic.” She also publicly praised Elon Musk, thanking him “for everything that you’re doing for humanity.” The internet reaction was immediate and wildly divided. Some X users loved the bizarre crossover between rap fandom and rocket science. One viral post joked, “Starbase? More like star-based queen.” Another wrote, “The timeline is getting unpredictable again.”
Not everyone was happy with the crossover
Other people online were more confused than excited by the collaboration, with critics questioning why Minaj was featured so heavily during a major aerospace event. One commenter wrote, “Why the [expletive] would you invite Nicki Minaj to Starbase? The relevancy is mind boggling…” while another joked that the next launch would include “pink thrusters, backup dancers, and DJ Khaled yelling ‘Another one!’ from mission control.”
Despite the memes and the mockery, the launch itself represents a major milestone for SpaceX. The V3 version of Starship is considered the company’s most ambitious rocket yet and is designed for future and hopeful moon and Mars missions. Moreover, the spacecraft is expected to play a central role in NASA’s Artemis lunar program later this decade.
Whether Minaj returns for the next launch attempt remains unclear, but after one of the most surreal celebrity cameos in recent memory, the internet has already crowned the event the “Starships were meant to fly” timeline. Funny enough, the Starbase launch wasn’t the only high-profile appearance Minaj had as of late. Last December, the rapper drew controversy after attending Erika Kirk’s TPUSA event and cementing her support for the MAGA movement and the Trump administration.
