The Spawn Universe is about to get a little larger with an upcoming sci-fi series. Image Comics has announced that a new series, titled Rat City, is joining the world of the popular Hellspawn. Bringing this new series to the franchise is award-winning writer Erica Schultz, who recently worked on Marvel’s Daredevil: Gang War series. Joining Schultz is artist Ze Carlos. Their work can be seen in Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, and Image comics. Together the two will put the spotlight on another Hellspawn living a hundred years in the future.

According to Image Comics, this new series is set nearly a hundred years in the future of the Spawn Universe. Rat City explores a world ravaged by corruption and inequality. It follows a former soldier named Peter Cairn. Cairn is also known as “The Deviant” because his transformation is not influenced by Hell itself. Instead, an unforeseen twist of fate sets Cairn on his journey. A twist of fate that appears to stem from an unthinkable act committed by original Spawn, Al Simmons.

Rat City aims to explore themes of loss and survival and what it means to reinvent yourself. To analyze these themes, the series focuses on two groups: the privileged elite and the oppressed masses. Peter Cairn will take readers through this part of the Spawn Universe. He will show them the harsh realities of this world. One with no distinct line separating right and wrong and one person’s actions can have consequences for so many.

Expanding The Spawn Universe

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been itching to expand the universe and is excited to be rolling out these new projects. Last month, McFarlane gave fans their first look at another Spawn Universe series, Sam and Twitch: Case Files. That series follows fan-favorite detectives Sam and Twitch as they explore a noir-style New York and solve crimes both natural and supernatural. Now, Rat City is taking the franchise even further…a hundred years in the future to be exact.

Speaking about the series and its creators, McFarlane is happy to see other talented creators play within the sandbox of Spawn’s universe. Especially folks like Erica Schultz who is an excellent writer and brings a female view to the franchise for the first time. Plus, Ze Carlos’ work always brings a project to new heights.

Rat City arrives on April 10th from Image Comics.
