Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is due to hit home entertainment media soon – but not just in the way you expect.
Of course, fans will have the opportunity to stick the original theatrical release in their Blu-ray players anytime they wish. However, the Powers-That-Be have a superheroic treat for those who want more action from the Spider-Verse.
Last week, at a digital and physical media release press day for Into the Spider-Verse, its three directors revealed that we can expect an ‘Alt-Universe’ cut of their successful Spider-Man feature. The aforementioned helmsmen, Rodney Rothman, Bob Persichetti, and Peter Ramsey, were heavy on detail in regards to what fans can expect:
[Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse] had an unusual amount of material at every stage of production. So, an insane amount of storyboard material, like insane, like break your high end edit systems insane. An insane amount of layout, an insane amount of finished animation that didn’t make it into the movie… an unusual amount. So the Alt-Universe Cut contains a bunch of that stuff that we chose not to put in the movie, but that in an alternate universe easily could have ended up in the movie. So, uh, that’s kind of the premise behind it.
The directors openly admitted that this version of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t the best version of the movie. After all, if that were the case, it would have been released in cinemas! However, they claim there’s a whole host of exciting new content that’ll appeal to fans. The Spider-Ham short, for example, will be inserted into the beginning, but also new scenes casting light on Miles Morales’ friendship with his roommate, Ganke, are present.
Persichetti claimed that Ganke and Miles’ friendship would be similar to how they operated in the comics. He also acknowledged that Ned in Spider-Man: Homecoming was similar to said character (which many fans have pointed out).
Looks like this is one edition to watch out for. The home and digital releases of the movie are due for release March 19th, 2019.
