Nothing’s more infuriating than dealing with a pesky child whose parent couldn’t care less about their wrongdoings. And things become infinitely worse when crime is involved, which is why one woman in Portland, Oregon, took to r/legaladvice to ask for help involving a very legal problem with her neighbor’s 15-year-old daughter: the theft of her son’s $1,500 electric dirtbike.
It all began a few nights earlier, when the neighbor’s teenage daughter snuck into the woman’s backyard late at night, acting very suspiciously. She was inspecting the dirtbike, but didn’t do anything yet. Come two days later, the bike was gone, and it was incredibly obvious to everyone who the thief was. “When I informed her mother, the girl initially denied everything,” the woman explained, but later it was revealed that the girl had even admitted to stealing the dirtbike. Eventually, multiple people witnessed the 15-year-old and her boyfriend riding the stolen bike, leading the teen thief to confess to the crime.
The girl’s mom reacted by sending her away to her father’s house, as the couple had divorced, to avoid responsibility. Meanwhile, the mother of the son whose bike was stolen had contacted the police about the incident, but the authorities gave nothing but empty promises. A month and a half later, nothing had been done, not from the cops nor the teen girl’s family.
Teen Girl and Her Parents Didn’t Even Apologize for the Theft
“There appears to be no accountability, no restitution, and no consequences, leaving my family without the bike and without any form of resolution,” OP groans on Reddit, confused about what she’s supposed to do. Neither the 15-year-old thief nor her parents had even apologized to the son or the mother, let alone offered any sort of compensation. “Whats even more infuriating, they have gotten a new car since and the kids got a bunch of gaming consoles and stuff,” she exclaimed.
Since the police aren’t helping, one commenter suggested taking the parents to small claims court. Since the girl’s mom and stepfather were her legal caretakers, they were responsible for her behavior. The wild thing is that the parents told the woman to take things up with the police, not them. “No wonder why she is an entitled little brat,” remarked a Redditor. “Her family asking you to take it to police without taking responsibility to her actions as her parents… they are the real problem…“
In the end, the woman claims she’s going to take the family to court for what they let the 15-year-old thief do. She has all the evidence she needs, including a recording of the teenager admitting to her crime. Hopefully, that should be enough to make the judge carry out some sort of justice.
