Like previous game versions, Splatoon 3 has reintroduced a rivalry we all love — the choice between Inkling and Octoling. What you choose largely depends on your preferences, as the choice doesn’t affect the game mechanics. You can also easily switch sides as you will soon learn from this guide how to change between Inkling and Octoling on Splatoon 3.

Here is how to choose between Inkling and Octoling in Splatoon 3.

  1. Press the X button to open the menu.
  2. Scroll to the Options tab.
  3. Navigate to Other and select Player Settings. From here, choose the character type you want to play.

Even as you choose between Octoling and Inkling, do you know their back story? Here’s some of that:

Splatoon 3: Inklings

Inklings are the main protagonists in the story. They are humanoids that can take squid form when in the water. You can easily tell them apart from the Octolings because their tentacles are more bubbly on the edges. Inklings are some of the surviving species after the rise in sea levels. Their dispute with the Octolings rises from a need to control the little land available.

Splatoon 3: Octolings

Like Inklings, Octolings are also humanoid forms, the difference being that their swimming form is octopus and not squid. They are available in Splatoon 3 as a starting character, and you can choose them using the instructions above. The Octolings used to be adversarial, but they now seek peace and unification with the Inklings via the efforts of Dj Octavio.

Octolings hairstyles feature function cups like those of an octopus on top of their heads. It is a key distinguishing feature between them and the Inklings. Also, the black markings on their faces do not connect at the centre, as with Inklings.
