If you’re an avid Spotify user, then you’re aware of what Spotify Wrapped is at the end of the year. The application takes everything you’ve listened to over the year and puts it all together into a set of statistics for you to see how you listened to music during that time. Now, Spotify users can create their own Bedroom, a room that is decorated with the aesthetic of the music you’ve listened to over they year. While the idea is incredibly cool, Spotify users didn’t realize just how much of their accounts they were signing away just to have access to the feature.

TikTok user kirkiimad shows that by creating your own Spotify Bedroom, you give Discz x Verse (who are other music apps) access to take actions on your behalf and:

  • Add and remove items from Your Library.
  • Create, edit, and follow private playlists.
  • Create, edit, and follow other playlists.

After learning about the news, one commentator wrote, “how else am I gonna see my spotify bedroom? sacrifices must be made.” However, other commentators took note of the rest of the terms and conditions, such as the section stating that the user can remove this access at any time within their account settings. Of course, Spotify wouldn’t just allow for their user’s data to be taken without the choice of stopping it; you just need to read the fine print to realize that.

More users who prefer not to have their Spotify data previewed should think about how often they willingly give away information to websites as they passively scroll through them. To add my two cents, I have to say I agree with one commentator who summed up the ordeal better than anyone else in the TikTok video’s replies: “Wait until you find out about accepting cookies on websites.“
