Star Trek gets the Tarantino treatment. The famed director of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction confirms he’s written a script for a new Star Trek Movie.
It’s been speculated for months that the prolific filmmaker was taking a crack at the Trek franchise. Tarantino’s project was just one of many rumored over the last few months, including the highly awaited Star Trek: Picard.
A new Star Trek film idea was pitched by Tarantino to J.J. Abrams, who then took it to Paramount. All parties were said to have liked the idea, at which point, it was sent to Mark L. Smith for further development.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Tarantino all but confirmed the existence of the script. “There’s a script that exists for it now, I need to weigh in on it, but haven’t been able to do that yet.”
Tarantino is set to release the highly anticipated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. With such a busy schedule, it’s no wonder the director hasn’t had time to dedicate to Trek. The fact that a script was ordered, however, does show Paramount is serious about the idea. It would be great if Tarantino directed the new Trek movie as well, but that remains to be set in stone.
No ideas about the premise are knowns, other than that it will be rated R. The original cast of the new Trek movies are unclear if they will be involved in the new project. Several cast members have stated previously that they would love to continue in the franchise.
“I mean, it’s been a broad conversation that we’ve been having for a while in terms of what’s the future of the franchise,” Zachary Quinto has said. “It’s in process so I don’t know exactly what to say other than there’s no plans for a movie happening at this moment.
Quentin Tarantino is definitely a left-field choice to develop a Star Trek project. His name is typically synonymous with over the top violence and not pulpy science fiction. With the Trek movies stagnated at the moment, perhaps the iconic director is exactly what the series needs.
