Star Wars fans were treated to an all-new behind-the-scenes trailer for Star Wars: Outlaws at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The open-world action/adventure game is set to be released in 2024, and fans are clambering for any new information they can get. Luckily, the two new trailer is chock-full of exciting details for us to unpack. Right off the bat, the trailer introduces two game developers who work for LucasFilm Games. It was later confirmed that LucasFilm was involved in nearly every aspect of Star Wars: Outlaws‘ creation from start to finish. This will surely be welcome news to Star Wars fans worried about Ubisoft handling their beloved IP.
It has been well-established that the game is set to take place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. However, in the trailer, we learn that this suggestion came directly from Lucasfilm. Steve Blank, the director of Lucasfilm franchise content and strategy, stated,
“This [era] is a moment where the civil war between the Empire and the Rebellion is at its height, and this creates an environment across the galaxy where outlaws can thrive.”
Star Wars: Outlaws Will Introduce New Lore
Interestingly, we learn that although classic Star Wars syndicates will be present in the game, Ubisoft has also worked with Lucasfilm to create entirely new factions. The most notable of which is known as the Yeshiga Clan. Details regarding the clan are slim, but a brief clip in the trailer highlights their brutality.
A new faction is not the only addition to the lore, as an entirely original moon planet has also been built from the ground up for Star Wars: Outlaws. The aforementioned Steve Blank reveals the planet’s name, Toshara, and recalls that it has been constructed “with the scoundrel fantasy at its beating heart.”
The Game Will Contain Gameplay Feature Unique to the Franchise
Perhaps one of the most enticing revelations of the trailer was that Kay Vess’ companion, Nix, actually has gameplay utility. We see a brief clip of the player commanding Nix, with the option to have him distract enemies, attack, and even push a button.
Matt Martin, a Senior Creative Executive at Lucasfilm, boasts of the dense gameplay features the game has to offer. Players can “Travel, explore, and discover in a way that (they) haven’t been able to experience in modern Star Wars gaming.”
Furthermore, it is now official that there will be space combat, as seen in a very brief clip. The clip highlights the player attempting to calibrate their hyperdrive while engaging in a dogfight. There are several dynamic icons on the screen, but until more information is revealed, that’s the extent of our knowledge.
Star Wars: Outlaws is slated for a 2024 release date. Until then, players can look forward to a KOTOR remake, along with a plethora of other Star Wars games.
