One material that is crucial to your farm’s progression in Stardew Valley is Hardwood, a raw resource used in many early- and late-game recipes. Such recipes include crafting stations like the Cheese Press or Oil Maker, every fast-travel Warp Totem, Casks for aging foods, and Heavy Tappers for quick sap production. Furthermore, you will need Hardwood to purchase the second Farmhouse Upgrade and Stable construction from Robin. In other words, it is impossible to upgrade your home or craft many practical items and structures without procuring Hardwood in Stardew Valley.
Farming Hardwood in Stardew Valley
During the initial years after the game’s release, farming the Hardwood resource in Stardew Valley was primarily harvesting the Large Stumps in the Secret Woods. You could access this area after breaking the log blocking the location’s entrance using a Steel Axe. However, Hardwood is notably easier to come by, thanks to the Mahogany Tree.

How to Complete the Dark Talisman Quest in Stardew Valley
Introduced in the 1.5 Update, Mahogany Trees can be found naturally growing on Ginger Island, a post-game area that you can access after completing the Community Center’s Bundles. However, you can occasionally get Mahogany Tree Seeds by harvesting the Large Stumps in the Secret Woods or slaying the Slimes in the wooded alcove. While the drop rate is not notably high, you will eventually receive Mahogany Tree Seeds while farming, allowing you to return to your farm and begin growing your own Mahogany Trees. You can also plant them around the town to ensure there is always a decent supply of seeds whenever you need to produce more. You can collect seeds by chopping down the trees with your axe or shaking them with your hands.
Remember to always have at least one or two Mahogany Trees standing after you have harvested them all for Hardwood in Stardew Valley. Unless you have access to Ginger Island, you will not have many seeds to plant if you only rely on a few trees for your Hardwood production. Therefore, making sure to first expand your tree farm by being patient, shaking the trees for seeds, and them chopping them down after you have over half a dozen is an ideal strategy.
Stardew Valley is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, Android, and PC.
