Have you checked your extended warranty lately? It’s something that’s common to hear in our daily lives, but it shows up in Starfield. Conquering the stars doesn’t leave a salesman or conman behind. A very real-life event happens in Starfield once you come across an unknown ship that strongly encourages you to buy an extended warranty for your ship. They do make a point, but is the offer too good to be true? We’ll discuss whether you should buy it and what happens either way.

Unknown Ship Warranty in Starfield – What Is It?

There’s a random chance for you to encounter an unknown vessel at some point in your journey. There’s a space salesman onboard who’s ready to sell his pitch. It’s one of the many random encounters Starfield offers players. But what exactly is the extended warranty in Starfield?

It’s what it claims to be. Once you answer the transmission, the mysterious salesman remarks on how you must purchase a new warranty or extend the one you have. It’s all due to the uncertain nature of the political situation in the Settled Systems, according to the salesman.

You can hear him out, ask him to stop and leave you alone, or attack the ship. If you continue, you’ll get more chances to back out or attack. There’s plenty of information Starfield dives into when it comes to the extended warranty. It’s easy to believe this is something vital that you must pay for.

If you continue to hear his pitch, you will eventually discover they are offering three different plans at different price points:

  • 50,000 Credits
  • 100,000 Credits
  • 200,000 Credits

Should You Buy the Extended Warranty in Starfield?

No. Don’t buy the extended warranty in Starfield. Why? Because telescams are as active as ever in space. If you purchase a plan, nothing changes about your ship, and the unknown ship will disappear with your Credits. Nothing else happens in the game either since it has no impact on the storyline. You still have to pay the Ship Services Technicians to repair your ship. It seems like this is just a little Easter egg for those classic scammers many of us unfortunately know about.

If you decide to attack the salesman who wants to give you an extended warranty in Starfield, they will turn hostile. However, it can be a short battle as they will usually flee. If you want to take them out, disable their grav drive and engines first. It’s a good way to have enough time to destroy and loot the ship.

But there’s a moral to this story. Never fall for a telescam, even if it’s in space.
