Like other Bethesda titles, Starfield will get a post-launch expansion called ‘Shattered Space.’ This expansion will be one of the biggest in any other titles by the developer. This is a huge undertaking given how other expansions from previous Bethesda games have been huge, such as Dawnguard or Far Harbor. Still, given how big Starfield is and all the years the developers put into it, the expectations for the game’s first DLC are huge. So, if you want to learn more about the Shattered Space expansion for Starfield, we have all the details here.

Editor’s note: This article was recently updated with new information following the ONL trailer.

Following Gamescom’s Opening Night Live broadcast, Bethesda has now confirmed Starfield Shattered Space will launch on September 30.

The Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer gave us a fairly robust overview of what the DLC’s story will entail. As it turns out, it’s a prequel-like narrative to Starfield, one that delves into a darker, more sinister tale than the main game. Set before any known ending, the trailer introduces eerie, almost Lovecraftian planets where cultists worship alien gods and twisted goat-like creatures stalk the land.

At the heart of this expansion lies Dazra, a ghostly city on the shadowed planet Va’ruun’kai, the hidden home world of House Va’ruun—the enigmatic faction devoted to the Great Serpent. Abandoned facilities filled with haunting, spectral figures conceal secrets they’re desperate to keep buried, pushing intruders away with an unsettling force.

Dazra is in the midst of upheaval, offering players a deeper dive into the beliefs and struggles of House Va’ruun’s followers. The mystery deepens as you uncover a derelict star station, unraveling the catastrophic event that plunged Va’ruun’kai into its current desolation. Your mission? Piece together the truth and decide how to confront the cosmic calamity that threatens everything.

Alongside this shadowy journey, the Shattered Space DLC introduces the Rev-8, a sleek new vehicle perfect for exploring Starfield’s countless planets. On Va’ruun’kai, the Rev-8 will be your key to navigating the eerie, haunted landscapes of this strange and forgotten world.

How to Purchase the Shattered Space Expansion

If you want to get the Shattered Space expansion of Starfield, you have two options. You can buy the Premium Edition on Steam or Xbox. For the latter, though, if you’re a Game Pass member, you only have to pay $34.99 to upgrade to the Premium Edition and unlock the DLC when it launches. Steam members don’t have the upgrade option yet. It’s uncertain if the DLC will be available separately, but we imagine that might be the case.

And that’s everything we know right now regarding the Shattered Space expansion for Starfield. Hopefully, the game’s likely success will bring more post-launch content. Yet, don’t fret, as the game will be one of the largest regarding scale and content, which means we’ll have our hands full with it for a while.

Starfield will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC September 6.
