Excessive arrests are nothing new for law enforcement officers in the US, but one woman who was merely thinking it was safe to roller-skate in the Texas Capitol grounds was not prepared for that kind of reaction. Sadly, several State Troopers thought they needed to gang up on the civilian and wrestle her over to their vehicle for an arrest, leading to a rather traumatic incident for the woman.
The incident apparently took place in early February 2026, specifically in the Capitol grounds park in Austin, Texas. A woman identified as Ariana Diaz can be seen stowing away her roller skates and changing into regular shoes on the bench while the State Troopers waited for her. It’s not clear how long she has been roller-skating around the Capitol, but as soon as she finished changing shoes, several State Troopers grabbed her and carried her off to their vehicle.
Witnesses, mainly the other women filming the scene, were in disbelief at the arrest and even kept asking, “What crime did she commit?” and “What did she do?” as the officers seemed to have failed to relay why the skater was under arrest. They also didn’t issue any citation first, nor did they state to the skater why she was under arrest, leading to panic as they handcuffed the civilian.
Apparently, the State Troopers also chased off other skaters in the Capitol grounds. Thankfully, Diaz was allegedly released soon afterward, according to the video’s original poster, though the skater is “Still processing everything.” It was only thanks to the efforts of the bystanders that Diaz also managed to recover her eyeglasses, something the State Troopers knocked off during the arrest.
People Online Are Slamming the State Troopers
For the record, roller-skating or skating in general is supposedly prohibited in the Texas Capitol grounds, and State Troopers technically can conduct arrests, especially in stubborn or extreme cases. The most usual course of action, however, is just a citation, especially since Diaz didn’t appear to be resisting or defying the prohibition any further after being confronted. In any case, they released her right away, making the arrest and detention unnecessary or even excessive.
The arrest, meanwhile, has triggered many people online, “They did not tell her why they were arresting her and did not read her rights. This was an unlawful arrest,” rants a commenter. In the video, it appears Diaz wasn’t informed or read her Miranda rights while being handcuffed or bodyslammed to the pavement. “What they are doing to citizens currently isn’t normal. They are instilling fear,” according to an Instagram user.
Meanwhile, due to the rather Draconian nature of the arrest, comparisons were made by online commenters, with some even likening the State Troopers’ actions to a certain federal agency. “Oh cool. Now state troopers are adopting ICE behavior…no one could have predicted this. Except for everyone who predicted this,” says a commenter, while another also shares a similar sentiment, “Notice they are STATE TROOPERS* and NOT ICE!! This is America as usual, don’t be fooled into believing this is just a Trump/ICE thing.”
