The Chinese Room paid a visit to the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 to introduce their new game, Still Wakes the Deep. In the midst of some expected titles, this one came as a surprise. It’s a new horror narrative experience that takes place in the mid-1970s. We’ve got the announcement trailer attached below, but there’s more than meets the eye for Still Wakes the Deep. Let’s take a quick look at what we can look forward to in this new game from The Chinese Room.
The Chinese Room Gives the Xbox Showcase a Scare
Something strange is close by in Still Wakes the Deep. As an off-shore oil rig worker in 1975, you must endure an unforgiving storm in the North Sea. While the weather may seem manageable, there’s more peril to encounter.
The announcement trailer for Still Wakes the Deep shown during the Xbox Showcase gives us relatively little information to work with. We know it’s going to be a first-person narrative journey, though the lore has mostly been sealed away from us. Regardless, the rig worker walks through multiple sections of the oil rig as they navigate a disturbing environment. As previously mentioned, something terrifying is here, but we have no clue what we’re facing.
If nothing else, the trailer brings us the familiar atmospheric experience that we’ve come to expect from The Chinese Room. Their previous titles include Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Dear Esther, and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. With this in mind, we can anticipate some shocking appearances from our enemies, whoever they may be.
While The Chinese Room continues to develop Still Wakes the Deep, publisher Secret Mode is ready to cast away new footage before it arrives sometime in 2024. Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms will host the game – Steam and Epic Games Store are the PC stores to rely on for purchase.
You can catch more information on Still Wakes the Deep when it appears in the EDGE magazine feature story, issue 386. It’ll be dropping this week on June 15.
