The N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton held off newcomers Sinister 2 and Hitman to win the weekend box office yet again.
Straight Outta Compton earned $27.8 million domestically, bringing its domestic to an impressive $112.5 million. Sinister 2 came in third with $10.5 million and Hitman: Agent 47 arrived in fifth with $7.5 million.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation came in second with $11.7 million. The fifth entry in the Mission Impossible series has grossed $438.6 million worldwide.
You can view the box office grosses for the weekend below.
- Straight Outta Compton: $27.8 million
- Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation: $11.7 million
- Sinister 2: $10.5 million
- The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: $7.6 million
- Hitman: Agent 47: $7.5 million
- American Ultra: $5.7 million
- The Gift: $4.3 million
- Ant-Man: $4.2 million
- Minions: $3.9 million
- Fantastic Four: $3.6 million
Fantastic Four is still struggling and will likely be a significant loss for Fox. American Ultra, which cost $12 million to make, may possibly break even. As usual, this weekend is indicative of movie theaters simply not as busy during the end of the summer.
Hopefully, Straight Outta Compton’s success means that more biopics feature more pertinent, if at times controversial, subject material.
Collin MacGregor gave Straight Outta Compton four out of five stars, stating the film delivers “a visceral gut punch of a movie, refusing to sugar coat the reality of the 1980s rap scene.”
