As Street Fighter 6 gears up to start punching and kicking this summer, the TV and movie rights have been secured by Legendary. The first project will be a film, which is in the works alongside the company behind the games, Capcom. Nobody is attached to pen the script or direct the feature.
A Street Fighter movie coming has a different ring to it than it did in the past. Two previous bombs had been released with 1994’s self-titled film and 2009’s The Legend of Chun-Li. Animated projects have also been done in the past, but nothing has seen much success. The only one to receive attention and be remembered widely is the ’94 film, despite its poor reception. Now with successful live-action adaptions of games like Sonic the Hedgehog, The Last of Us, and Detective Pikachu, the film is in a better landscape.
Street Fighter movie is in the works as Legendary acquires film and TV rights
Starting out as an arcade game in 1987, the franchise has become one of the most beloved in the genre. Capcom has developed and published the franchise across various platforms, from PC to console to the arcade. While it rivals games like Injustice, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Mortal Kombat, it has sold 49 million copies worldwide. Although nothing has beaten Mortal Kombat in the genre, it is in a healthy place as its next installment reaches for its release on June 6 for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Legendary is set to have a big year as Dune: Part Two will release later this year, adding to its history of grossing $19 billion at the box office. As developing adaptions of games have proven useful when a new installment is around the corner, the film is aiming for a good position if the sixth game resonates well with players.
