Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, and Adam Hunter are back in the upcoming Streets of Rage 4. The newest addition to the Streets of Rage franchise has some fun new features—namely some new playable characters and a new soundtrack, which can be swapped with the soundtracks from previous games.
Lizardcube, the developers behind of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, are the masterminds behind this addition to the original Sega Streets of Rage series. Streets of Rage 4 is coming to PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox and will include two-player online co-op and four-player local co-op – will cost £22.49/$24.99 USD when it releases. Lizardcube states that the 23rd April launch date spotted on eShop today “is not correct.”
“We are aware that some of you have seen a release date leaked this afternoon. Right now, we cannot confirm it yet and apologize for the confusion. We will keep you updated officially as soon as possible, and thank you for your patience,” DotEmu—the publishers of the game—wrote on Twitter.
The confirmed character list for Streets of Rage 4 is:
- Axel Stone
- Blaze Fielding
- Adam Hunter
- Cherry Hunter
- Floyd Iraia
- Max ‘Thunder’ Hatchett
- Eddie ‘Skate Hunter
- Dr. Gilbert Zan
Streets of Rage 4 aims to be a modernized take on the classic side-scrolling beat-’em-up action seen in previous Streets of Rage games. The game is reported to have “expanded combat abilities,” a new art style, plus music from Yūzō Koshiro—who did the music for Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3, and Sonic the Hedgehog—and Motohiro Kawashima—who also worked on the music for Streets of Rage 2 and 3, as well as Shinobi 2.
One thing is for certain Streets of Rage 4 looks like an interesting update to a beloved franchise. The updates sound interesting, and the trailers are interesting, and the music is fantastic. We are looking forward to a final release date and further details about this new take of a Sega classic.
