One aspect of the film fans are eating up is all the classic Mario characters making an appearance. Favorites such as Donkey Kong, Kamek, and of course, Toad are all appearing in the movie.
Super Mario Bros Movie: 10 Mario Characters Fans Hope To See
With the wide roaster of characters in the franchise, there are several others fans hope to get a glimpse of in Super Mario Bros Movie, and we are looking at ten of them today.
10. Yoshi
One of the more obvious characters fans hope to see in The Super Mario Bros Movie is classic companion Yoshi. First appearing in Super Mario World, Yoshi has evolved from a game mechanic to a beloved icon in his own right. Yoshi has yet to appear in any bit of marketing, implying he won’t be joining in on this adventure. Yoshi actually somewhat appeared in the ill-fated live-action Mario movie, so he deserves another shot on the big screen. While it is also likely his appearance is being kept a secret, he could also be saved for a sequel, one inspired by Yoshi’s Island, perhaps?
9. Wario
Another Mario character who has taken on a life of his own is Wario. Wario made his first appearance as the antagonist in the Gameboy game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Since then, he has appeared in many Mario games as well as two separate franchises, Wario Land and WarioWare. The character frequents the series, although he usually only appears in ensemble games such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Fans would love to see him shine on the big screen.
8. Waluigi
Ask many Mario fans who the most underrated character is, and they will proudly state Waluigi. Waluigi was created for nothing more than to pad out the roaster in sports-themes Mario titles. He has remained in these titles, not even appearing in the Super Smash Bros series. Besides this, he developed his own personality as a lying, conniving character who will do whatever it takes to win. Appearing in a movie could allow Nintendo to give him the attention fans feel he deserves. Fans constantly petition to have Waluigi in more games, namely Super Smash Bros, but many will likely settle for a big-screen appearance.
7. Daisy
Also first appearing in the Mario Land games on Gameboy is Daisy. Daisy is a princess that is far removed from Peach. Daisy is more of a tomboy, willing to jump into battle with the best of them. The spunky character has grown to be the love interest of Luigi in recent years, a perfect contrast to his wimpy nature. Daisy usually only appears in ensemble titles like Mario Kart, but fans are hoping for her to make another appearance in a proper Mario title. The Super Mario Bros Movie is a great way to give this character a chance to shine.
6. Diddy Kong
Frequent Donkey Kong partner Diddy Kong has become a fan favorite in his own right. Frequently portrayed as Donkey Kong’s nephew, Diddy is usually along for the adventure as long as DK is there. While Diddy is technically a Donkey Kong character as opposed to one of the Mario characters, he has appeared in a number of Mario titles. With DK appearing in the movie in what looks to be a large role, it is certainly possible for Diddy to make an appearance.
5. Bowser Jr.
Bowser looks to be a force to be reckoned with in this movie. He is also usually a formidable foe in the games, but he often has some help. Bowser’s son, first appearing in Super Mario Sunshine, is out to get Mario for all the times he pummeled his old man. While usually an antagonist, Jr has teamed up with Mario on rare occasions. The character is quickly becoming a fan favorite and is one of the primary antagonists of the New Super Mario Bros series. Fans would love to see the relationship between Bowser and his son on the big screen.
4. Pauline
As any true fan of Mario knows, the character made his first appearance in the original Donkey Kong arcade game. In that game, Mario, then known as Jump Man, must save a princess from an out-of-control ape. The princess isn’t Peach but instead a character known as Pauline. The original damsel in distress has appeared in several games since then, most notably as the mayor of New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey. Having Pauline as an original love interest in The Super Mario Bros Movie would be a great call back.
3. Toadette
There are many Mario characters that were created just to pad out the roaster in an ensemble game. For Toadette, that game was Mario Kart: Double Dash. Since then, she has made more and more appearances, even becoming a playable character in New Super Mario Bros. U. With Toad making an appearance in the movie, along with several other members of his species, odds are great the pink Toadette will make an appearance.
2. Dr. Egadd
The trailers for the film show Luigi having his own issues. They mostly involve him in scarier situations, clearly a reference to the Luigi’s Mansion series. If these games are to be an inspiration for Luigi’s side story, then Dr. Egadd should appear. Egad is a paranormal scientist who helps Luigi on his spooky adventures in the Luigi’s Mansion games. Egadd rarely appears outside of this series, so his appearance on the big screen would be a treat for fans.
1. Rosalina
Some of the best-regarded Mario games are Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel. One of the main characters of those games is Rosalina, a powerful figure who watches over the universe. Rosalina became a fan favorite instantly and has appeared in several spin-off games such as Super Smash Bros and Mario Party. Luma, a star creature, also appeared in the Maro Galaxy series and has been confirmed to appear in The Super Mario Bros Movie. With Luma appearing, it is very likely Rosalina will appear in some form.
