DC Comics is giving readers the first details for its upcoming Action Comics event,Superman and the Challenge from the Stars. The three-part story arc will stretch over upcoming issues of Action Comics. The arc brings fan-favorite writer Gail Simone back to the world of Superman. She is joined by artist Eddy Barrows as well as Danny Miki, Rex Lokus, and Dave Sharpe. It all kicks off in July’s Action Comics #1067. The issue will feature a story that is set near the beginning of Clark Kent’s superhero adventures.
Superman And The Challenge From The Stars
This new Superman arc kicks off with an alien invasion on Earth. As the Man of Steel begins his heroic career, an alien race decides to make Earth its arena. Naturally, it is up to Superman to stand alone against the impossible challenges these aliens bring. As the invaders threated locations across the globe and the lives of those he loves, Clark Kent is in for the fight of his life. It is one that helps set the tone for the type of hero that he will eventually become.
Speaking about the story, writer Gail Simone shared that she loves the classic Superman cast. So, it is a dream come true getting to delve into a story that echoes her all-time favorite Man of Steel era. Simone wanted the stakes to be higher than ever with a threat that seems impossible to overcome. Insert an invasion that threatens the entire world and is something only Superman could hope to stop. It is huge in scope while being a story that is fun. Plus, Simone notes that working with one of the best art teams she has ever worked with is a huge plus as well.
A Superstar Initiative
Gail Simone and Eddy Burrow are just the latest all-star creative team to work on Action Comics. This collaboration is part of DC’s Superman Superstars initiative for this year. Issues of Action Comics will feature these collaborations. A rotating array of writers and artists will team up for mini arcs. Simone and Burrow’s Superman and the Challenge from the Stars follows two other arcs this year. This includes Jason Aaron and John Timm’s I, Bizarro and Joshua Williamson and Rafa Sandoval’s House of Brainiac.
