According to recent news, it appears Superman is getting the prequel treatment in the form of a new show titled “Krypton” on Syfy…well sort of.
In 2014, David S. Goyer was said to be working with Syfy on an origin story for Superman that would be in the same vein as the current show “Gotham” on the WB. The show would be titled Krypton and as of today is very close to a pilot order. Goyer has penned the screenplays for “Batman Begins,” “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and will write the pilot for this as well with Ian Goldberg. The premise is described here:
“The series, set two generations before the destruction of Superman’s titular home planet, would tell the story of the man of steel’s grandfather as he fights to restore the family honor of the House of El after it has been shamed.”
One of the big concerns expressed so far from some is, why should we have any investment in this show? We all know about the eventual fate of Krypton and how Superman came to be, so what would compel us to tune into Krypton week after week. Goyer has said that the show will “involve a lot more of the mythology than I think people realize…a lot more.” He has also teased a deep connection with other shows in the DC universe such as The Flash, Gotham, Supergirl, and Arrow. It will also serve as a slate for more movies featuring Superman along with members of The Justice League.
What do you think of the potential for the show Krypton? Would you like to see a show that involved Superman’s grandfather or has that mythology already been explored to an extent that any more would seem irrelevant? Be sure to let us know in the comments below and check back for future updates.
