Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale has both a title and a release date now. This comes after an announcement at the Dengeki Bunko Haru no Saiten 2016 event on Sunday. Aniplex confirmed the news as well, releasing a trailer for the upcoming film.

The film will focus on a new virtual reality game called “Ordinal Scale.” It will release in Japan sometime in 2017. The movie is set after the second season of the anime series. The game Ordinal Scale will become the latest in the group of MMO-RPGs brought about in Kirito’s world. Ordinal Scale is played on a new device called the “Augma,” which seems to be named for the type of technology the device uses.

In many ways, this movie is set up in the same way the anime series is – a new virtual reality-based game comes out, something goes wrong with it, and Kirito has to figure out a solution. Both of the original voice actors for Kirito (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) and Asuna (Haruka Tomatsu) will be returning for the film, as well as director Tomohiko Ito. Reki Kawahara, who wrote the Sword Art Online manga series, is also writing the original story for this movie. In addition, Shingo Adachi is continuing in character design and Yuki Kajiura will once again be in charge of the soundtrack.

Concept art for Kirito and Asuna has also been revealed, coming from Sword Art Online illustrator abec.
