Forbes is reporting this morning that the gaming-centric streamer Binge’s System Shock live-action series that we reported about in October of 2021, has found its writer. Greg Russo will not only be writing the show, but will also make his directorial debut for the first episode. Accompanying Binge to help produce the series will be Nightdive Studios, which currently own the rights to System Shock. Russo shared his thoughts on this news:
I’m honored to have the opportunity to work alongside the fantastic team at Binge and Nightdive Studios to bring the iconic System Shock franchise to life. I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to make my directorial debut, and I finally found it.
Besides writing the Mortal Kombat script, Russo has also written other gaming adaptations like Space Invaders and Saints Row.
System Binge
If the up and coming, gaming-centric streaming platform Binge is not on your radar yet, it should be as they strive to be a streaming provider that focuses solely on adaptations of video game IPs. Not only will Binge have a System Shock live-action series but they are also developing adaptations of Hunt: Showdown and the old school PS1 game, Driver.
Mortal Kombat on HBO Max got a warm reception from the audience, but critics tended to not give this adaption a warm reception. The first act and the last chunk are great, although the dialogue and the interactions of all the characters, specifically between Sonya and Kano, were all fluff with no character shining through the dialogue. Which led to some critics finding the movie overall boring. Visually, it is a sight to see, but saving Scorpion, the most appealing character, for the end and beginning seemed to leave a lot to the imagination for a lot of critics. We will just have to wait and see how the System Shock live-action series fairs when it releases on Binge.
