James Gunn revealed that Taika Waititi consulted him before filming Thor: Love and Thunder to help shape the Guardians of the Galaxy. He also said that he suggested adjustments to the script to help shape the role in the Guardians of the Galaxy. In response to a question of how much Gunn had over Thor 4’s script, the writer stated,” I asked for some things to be adjusted, and they were adjusted.” (Click on the thread for more of Jame’s reply to the question).

Gunn had stated that the Guardians of the Galaxy were “in great hands” of director and writer Taika Waitit back in 2021. In another interview in February 2021, Gunn said, “We talked before [Waititi] started writing it about where the characters are and where they’re going. He read the script for Vol. 3, and then I read his script and shared my thoughts.” When asked what kind of input he would offer to the Love and Thunder script, Gunn replied, “Not much, and he’s doing a great job. – the script is amazing.”
In the same Tweet thread mentioned above, Gunn had also stated that he helped steer the direction of both Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He also stated that he had already begun storyboarding for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.
Thor: Love and Thunder: Taika Waititi and James Gunn Uniting Two Loved Casts
Thor: Love and Thunder follows up the events of Avengers: Endgame. In Endgame, Thor had fallen into a deep depression after failing to kill Thanos before the snap from Infinity War. Chris Hemsworth once again will reprise his role as Thor for Love and Thunder. As seen in the first teaser trailer, Tessa Thompson will also be making an appearance as Valkyrie, as well as the cast for the Guardians of the Galaxy. Karen Gillan’s Nebula will also be making an appearance.
According to the synopsis, Thor, the Guardians of the Gallaxy, Jane Foster, and King Valkyrie will go against Gorr the God Butcher. Christian Bale will make his MCU debut playing Gorr. Waititi has also stated that this film will not only be crazier than the last but more emotional than Thor: Ragnarok.
Thor: Love and Thunder will be in theaters on July 8th. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters on May 5th, 2023.
