Taika Waititi currently has his hands full with Thor: Love and Thunder but, it seems the director may soon be headed to a galaxy far… far away.
According to a report from THR, Taika Waititi has been approached by Disney to develop a Star Wars film. The THR article later goes on to state that not much else is known regarding how far along Disney and Waititi have gotten in these discussions or if this project relates to the Kevin Feige Star Wars film also in development. Deadline would later confirm THR’s report, saying that they aren’t sure if the pitched project is set for a release on Disney+ or in theaters.
Regardless of how the film is released, this would be a huge win for the Star Wars franchise. Waititi has been absolutely on fire as of late with critically-acclaimed projects such as Thor: Ragnarok and the Oscar-nominated Jojo Rabbit. He also voiced the droid IG-11 in The Mandalorian and directed the series’ season one finale.
As mentioned earlier, Waititi isn’t the only Marvel alum to be approached for a Star Wars film. Back in September, it was revealed that Marvel Chief Creative Officer and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige would bring his talents to the Star Wars franchise for a new movie. It still isn’t clear if this is a one-off project for Feige or if this is a set-up for the MCU boss to make a much larger dent in the Star Wars franchise. Much like the Taika Waititi situation, it seems that we’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
