A confrontation aboard a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train in New York is drawing attention online after a passenger appeared to react aggressively when fellow riders asked him to turn down the volume, which was playing loudly from his phone. The tense exchange, which was shared on social media, prompted widespread criticism, with many viewers arguing the man’s response only escalated the situation.

The video begins aboard a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train in New York as a passenger confronts fellow riders after they ask him to turn down the volume on videos he is watching on his phone. The exchange quickly escalates, with the man recording the other passengers while insisting he has every right to watch videos at the volume he chooses.

During the confrontation, the man repeatedly uses profanity and racial slurs while insisting he has the right to watch videos on his phone at the volume he chooses. “Tell me to turn the [expletive] volume down on my [expletive] phone. I ain’t got no speaker on, gang. It’s my [expletive] phone, [racial slur]! Suck my [expletive]! I’m watching videos on my phone, [racial slur]!” he says while confronting one passenger in a navy top.

However, another passenger wearing a blue hoodie also joins the exchange, repeatedly telling the man to “go sit down.” As the argument continues, a third passenger steps in and tries to defuse the situation, saying, “Bro, it’s over. Sit the [expletive] down! Sit down. Please. You’ve got 40 [expletive] guys that are telling you to sit down. Sit down.”

Despite the other passengers’ attempts to calm the situation, the man continues arguing, saying, “Three people told me to sit down. That guy, you, and now this guy. What the [expletive] are you talking about? Thirty people? What the [expletive] are you talking about?” The footage ends shortly afterwards, leaving the outcome of the confrontation unknown.

Reddit Sides With Fellow Long Island Rail Road Passengers

The heated exchange quickly drew reactions on Reddit, where many commenters sided with the passengers who asked the man to turn down his phone.

One person wrote, “This is a type of guy who has never been told ‘no’ before and now everyone’s gotta deal with his [expletive].” Another felt the situation should have been a clear indication that the man was in the wrong, commenting, “If everyone is telling you you’re wrong… you’re probably wrong. Take the L and sit down.”

Others focused on the irony that the man had uploaded the footage himself. One user remarked, “I love that he posted this. Can you believe what he has to deal with on the train?!?!” while another observed, “He didn’t want smoke with that last guy.”

Several commenters also shared similar experiences with loud phone users on public transport and while travelling. One recalled, “The guy next to me on a flight started watching a Netflix special on his phone with no headphones. Thankfully he turned it off to sleep—but 10 minutes before landing, he turned it back on to keep watching. Duuuudddeeee!!!”

The video did not reveal how the confrontation ended, but it has nevertheless sparked a broader discussion online about phone etiquette and respecting shared public spaces.
