The Tortured Poets Department has everyone in their feelings right now. The album, which dropped on Friday, April 19, details Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn‘s breakup on several songs. Since the pair kept things private throughout their relationship, fans couldn’t wait to hear the singer’s latest record for clues about why they split. Now, it seems they may have gotten an answer on “So Long, London.”
“So Long, London” Hints At Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s Breakup
Fans had a feeling the song would reference Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend even before it officially came out. Why? Well, the title seemed like an obvious nod to the British actor, who split with Swift in 2023 after six years together. “So Long, London” also appeared to be a follow-up to the singer’s 2019 track “London Boy,” which was rumored to be about Alwyn as well.
Now that the song is out, fans are more convinced than ever that Swift wrote the lyrics with Alwyn in mind. “So Long, London” details two people who used to be in love but gradually grew apart from each other. During the track, Swift explains she tried to hold her partner tight. However, he kept “drifting away” from her. Eventually, Swift stopped trying to keep their relationship alive after realizing she was the only one who was putting in any effort. Although she loved her partner, she can’t help but feel angry after wasting so many years with him.
I stopped CPR. After all, it’s no use. Thе spirit was gone. We would never come to. And I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.

Later in the song, Swift hints that she once saw marriage with her ex. She thought he wanted a future with her, too. However, after he failed to give her a ring, Swift began to doubt her partner’s commitment. She eventually realized he wasn’t the one after their relationship continued to go nowhere.
You swore that you loved me but where were the clues? I died on the altar waiting for the proof.
