Netflix has released a teaser trailer for The Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s series, Disenchantment. The teaser of the animated sitcom, which will air on August 17, 2018.
Disenchantment will take place in a fantasy medieval kingdom known as Dreamland and will follow the exploits of alcoholic princess Bean, her elf companion Elfo and her ‘personal demon’ Luci. It will bear Groening’s distinctive animation style which was used in The Simpsons and Futurama.
“Ultimately,” says Groening, “Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.” In much the same way Futurama was filled with science fiction tropes such as robots, interplanetary travel, mutants and alien species, this new show will use fantasy fixtures such as ogres, imps, wizards, harpies and trolls.
It will be animated by Rough Draft Studios who have produced animation for Groening’s previous shows.
It will star Abbi Jacobson, Nat Faxton, Eric Andre and even some returning actors from Futurama such as John DiMaggio and Billy West. Other standout names include British comedian Noel Fielding who is perhaps most famous internationally for co-creating and starring in The Mighty Boosh.
Given that the project is being executive produced by Groening as well as Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein, fans of his previous work will have a lot of reason to feel optimistic about the series. The Simpsons started in 1989 and is currently on its twenty-ninth season. It broke new ground, showing that animated series’ could be tooled for adults as well as young viewers. Futurama, on the other hand, ran for seven seasons, from 1999 to 2003 on Fox and then from 2010 to 2013 on Comedy Central.
Disenchantment‘s initial season will consist of ten episodes.
