A teenage Hispanic boy in Texas who got into an Uber was immediately told by the driver to exit the vehicle. According to the boy, he believes the driver did so because he is gay, although there is no clear evidence to support that, since the recording started after he had already been asked to leave.
In the video that was shared to TikTok, the teen asked the driver how he would get his money back since the ride had been canceled so suddenly. The driver told him to take it up with Uber and warned that he would call the police if he did not leave.
The boy then asked the driver directly why he was canceling the ride in the first place, but the man struggled to give a proper answer. “I don’t want to carry the… I have to leave,” he said, trailing off, which came across as a clear non-answer.
The boy got out of the car but was clearly upset. As he walked away, he began insulting the driver, calling him “stupid” and a “weirdo.” The driver got out of the car as well and started recording the teen, seemingly trying to gather evidence as he asked the now irate passenger to repeat what he had said.
The boy, on the other hand, did not hold back and continued to insult him while walking back toward the house he had come out from.
What The Teen Says Happened Before the Recording
After the video started gaining attention on TikTok, many people questioned what may have happened before the recording began. In response, the boy shared an update explaining that, according to him, nothing unusual happened before he pressed record.
He said that he had just greeted the driver with a simple “good morning” when, all of a sudden, the driver said he was going to cancel the ride. The boy believes the reaction may have been because of how he sounded, saying the driver picked up on what he described as a “little bit of gay” in his voice. He maintained that he did nothing else to provoke the situation.
The teen also said he tried to report the incident to Uber but claimed that his complaints were not properly addressed.
As the video continued to gain traction and surpassed 300,000 likes, Uber later responded in the comment section under the post. “Support team here – we’re sorry to hear this happened – this behavior isn’t okay. Uber does not tolerate discrimination of any kind and can confirm that a specialized team is actively reviewing this incident,” the company wrote.
Netizens React to the Texas Uber Situation
Many people on TikTok sympathized with the boy and felt that the incident should not have happened in the first place. “Sorry that happened to you. That behavior shouldn’t be tolerated at all,” one person wrote. Another commented, “People have so much hate.” A third added, “Shame on that Uber driver.”
A few others suggested that he should take things further, writing, “You needed to file a police report,” and “Get a discrimination attorney.”
However, not everyone was fully convinced by what they saw. A few people pointed out that they would want to hear more before forming an opinion. “I need to hear both sides,” one comment read, while another netizen said, “They don’t cancel for no reason.”
