A Tennessee homeowner has built a heavily reinforced mailbox after repeated vehicle collisions damaged the structure, prompting him to make it bigger and stronger each time. The project has drawn millions of views online, with viewers divided over its unusual construction. While some praised his effort to protect his property, others raised concerns about what could happen if another vehicle hit it.
Travis Howard shared the project on his TikTok account, @builtbytravis, where the video attracted millions of views. The unusual design caught attention because it resembles a small construction project more than a typical roadside mailbox.
In the video, Howard walks viewers through the structure, explaining how he built it to withstand repeated impacts. The mailbox rests on six-by-six posts secured in the ground with concrete. He estimated that the foundation contains about two and a half cubic yards of concrete, extends roughly four feet underground, and contributes to a total structure weighing around 4,000 pounds.
The finished design includes rocks, pavers arranged like a pathway, two-by-six boards, additional six-by-six lumber, stained wood trim, decorative lettering and the mailbox itself.
Howard explained that the mailbox had been hit repeatedly the previous year. Each collision left the hole around its foundation larger, forcing him to expand the structure during repairs.
After the final incident, the Tennessee homeowner decided to pursue the driver responsible. He recalled chasing the vehicle through Cookeville until he reached the driver’s home. Rather than demanding payment himself, he contacted police, who handled the matter. The driver’s insurance eventually covered the damage.
While showing off the latest version, Howard also warned potential drivers to avoid hitting it again. He ended the video by asking viewers to guess how long his reinforced mailbox would last.
Tennessee Homeowner’s Mailbox Divides Viewers
The reactions were mixed, with some viewers joking about testing the structure while others questioned whether it could create a safety hazard. “My question is, why does it get hit so much?” one user asked.
Some commenters joked about taking a swing at the mailbox, while others suggested making it even stronger with steel beams. Howard responded to one such suggestion with a shocked emoji.
However, other viewers worried that a structure built to withstand vehicle impacts could cause serious injuries in a collision. Some raised concerns about local road safety rules, noting that mailbox supports near roads are often designed to give way when struck. Others questioned whether those requirements would apply to a structure on private property.
Others defended him, arguing that drivers should pay attention to the road. Some also shared their own frustrations with repairing mailboxes damaged by snowplows or passing vehicles.
Ultimately, the Tennessee homeowner’s project has become more than a home improvement story. It has prompted a debate over property protection and road safety, leaving viewers with one question: How many more collisions can this mailbox survive?
