Wait, how old?

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, now 93, has filed paperwork with the FEC to run again in 2028. He’s been Iowa’s senator since 1981, and if he wins this time, he’d still be in office at 101. The news spread fast on X and quickly drew comments about his age and calls for term limits.

🚨 IT'S OFFICIAL: Sen. CHUCK GRASSLEY (R-IA), 93, files paperwork with the FEC for reelection in 2028

If he wins, he'll be 101 years old by the end of the term.

The post was shared on X by user @EricLDaugh. According to the post text, the 93-year-old Iowa Republican has filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission for a 2028 reelection bid; a win would mean he would be 101 at the end of that term. Public records show Grassley submitted a Statement of Candidacy in November 2022, which has remained on file and allows fundraising.

In prior interviews, including with Radio Iowa in 2025, he has said he would decide closer to the election and typically answers questions about 2028 by saying, “Ask me the question in a couple of years,” citing family considerations and “whether or not I can do the job.”

Grassley has long supported term limits in principle while noting that “the ballot box is term limits if people don’t want you in there.”

What People Are Saying About Grassley Staying in the Fight

Many called for him to step aside or face a primary. One wrote, “I am sorry, but it is TIME for him to retire! When you see this, you know very well Grassley is part of the DEEP STATE! Come on… enough is enough! @ChuckGrassley Stop being SELFISH and MOVE ON!”

Another said, “Grassley needs to be primaried! Wake up Iowa!” A third posted, “Term limits please!” while a fourth added, “I like him, but he’s far too old. We don’t need another McConnell.”

Some mixed respect for his long service with concerns about age. One user wrote, “I respect Chuck Grassley’s decades of service, but if he actually runs again in 2028, I think we need an honest conversation about age limits for federal office. We already accept age requirements for positions carrying enormous responsibility, and the Constitution itself says a senator must be at least 30. A six-year term beginning at 95 and potentially ending at 101 is difficult for me to defend. Under current law, the voters get to decide, but I would support a constitutional amendment establishing a reasonable maximum age for federal elected office.”

A smaller group backed him staying on. One commenter said, “Chuck is awesome and still does the job incredibly well. Doesn’t miss a vote and still gets around better than most people 20 years younger! Who cares how old someone is if they can still be effective and do their job well? Senator Grassley checks those boxes. Grassley 2028!”

Grassley still hasn’t said for sure if he’ll run again; he’s said he’ll decide closer to 2028. The filing just adds one more piece to the long-running talk about how old is too old for Congress.
