James Talarico demanded on June 18 that Ken Paxton’s office release records tied to a child sexual abuse plea deal. The Democratic Senate candidate made the request during an appearance in Waco, Texas.
Talarico asked the attorney general’s office to disclose communications about the agreement involving Adam Dean Hoffman. Hoffman spent 30 days in jail and avoided sex offender registration after admitting to molesting a boy and surrendering his law license.
Court records obtained by several outlets showed the case ended in a mistrial. Prosecutors offered Hoffman a deal after the victim declined to testify again.
Assistant Attorneys General Brenda Cantu and Dorian Cotlar later wrote the decision was “made entirely in the best interest of the child involved.”
After the agreement became public, the victim’s mother alleged that authorities “all bent the system to protect him instead of protecting my son.” She claimed the case received special treatment because of Hoffman’s connections.
Talarico said, “no one, not even the attorney general of Texas, should be able to cover up crimes against children.” He called on Paxton’s office to release the records.
Paxton campaign spokesperson Madison Cercy called Talarico’s actions “disgusting.” She said the campaign “stands with the child victim” and accused Talarico of seeking political gain.

The case prompted sharp reactions as users argued over accountability and the handling of the plea deal.

Questions over whether Paxton’s office will release additional records remain unresolved.
