A video was posted to the social media platform X by lawyer and member of the Texas House of Representatives, Gina Hinojosa, discussing the rise in taxes under Greg Abbott and its effect on public classrooms.
Hinojosa goes over what it is that taxes are currently covering while acknowledging that “schools are in a crisis.” While some commenters came to her defense in the replies below the video, a vast majority condemned her phrasing, saying that their taxes have actually gone down over the last three years.
Hinojosa is a member of the Democratic Party and is competing against the incumbent governor and Republican primary winner, Greg Abbott, for Governor this November. In the video above, she is being asked, “Would you support raising taxes to increase school funding,”
She almost appears to be shocked by this question before answering. Hinojosa replies with, “No, we don’t need to.” According to her justification, taxes have risen a staggering 75% over the last three years under Abbott. Even then, schools have still reportedly been shut down due to a lack of funding.
The way she describes it is, “We pay more, we get less. We’re all paying the Greg Abbott Corruption Tax.” She then goes on to accuse Abbott of providing all of these additional funds to his own personal vendors within his circle.
Commenters weren’t all too pleased to hear this, with many condemning her choice of words.
Reactions to Gina Hinojosa Slamming Greg Abbott
Many commenters were angry with Hinojosa, with one person even calling her a “thief,” saying, “I want my money BACK. You THIEVES take it from me, that I work hard to earn and save and you FORCE me to pay for your miserable FAILING schools for people who don’t deserve ANY money and NEVER earned it. ELIMINATE PROPERTY TAXES AND CLOSE THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS.”
Others accused her of potentially doing the very same thing as Abbott should she be in office instead, with another person writing, “No you won’t. It will flip to YOUR preferred “vendors” and kickbacks to you. No more money for ESL. No more money for the indoctrination centers public schools have become. No more money period. [Expletive] every single one of you citizen hating pieces of government {expletive}.“
Another group of replies comes from those who have experienced the opposite of what Hinojosa is saying, with another person writing, “My property taxes are down and have went down over the last 3 years, besides most of my taxes are caused by local school taxes. Are you against schools getting tax money?“
As the video continues to go viral, more and more people are leaving their opinions known in the comments.
