Texas Critics Rip Abbott’s $40M Teacher Plan as Election-Year “Performative” Politics: “It’s All Show”

Nice timing

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is touting a new $40 million investment in teacher recruitment and retention, but some Texans are not exactly lining up to applaud.

The money will go to 411 school systems through the state’s Preparing and Retaining Educators through Partnerships Program Allotment, known as PREP, with funding aimed at paid teacher residencies, mentor stipends and partnerships between school districts and universities.

As reported by Click 2 Houston, Abbott said the investment would help make sure teachers enter classrooms prepared to succeed. But on the Texas subreddit, where the announcement was shared and quickly drew hundreds of comments, the reaction was considerably less charitable.

One commenter dismissed the move as election-season theater, writing: “He is announcing it a week before the election so he gets the credit and never has to do it. It’s all show.”

Another mocked what they saw as a sudden change in tone from Abbott after years of frustration over Texas public school funding.

“Look at this thing I’m doing to help them right now because I look bad at the polls. Aren’t I such a champion of education?” the commenter wrote sarcastically.

That anger matters because the $40 million announcement is arriving against a much bigger problem. Texas districts have increasingly relied on waivers allowing them to hire uncertified teachers as schools struggle to fill classrooms. The state’s own Teacher Vacancy Task Force has previously pointed to pay, workplace pressure, and weak support for new educators as factors driving teachers out of the profession.

Critics Say Texas Schools Needed Help Long Before Election Season

That context is exactly why several Reddit users were unimpressed by Abbott’s announcement.

“JUST FUND THE SCHOOLS PROPERLY!” one commenter wrote.

Another accused state leaders of starving schools before offering money back at politically convenient moments, saying: “They’ve been gutting the schools and waiting for the elections to ‘give’ the money back.”

The criticism is political and deeply partisan, but it exposes the problem Abbott now has with skeptical voters. The PREP funding itself is real and targeted. Under the program, student teachers can receive support during year-long residencies, experienced educators can be paid for mentoring new teachers and districts can build pipelines into hard-to-fill subjects including special education, bilingual education and STEM.

That may help. It also does not erase years of frustration overnight. For voters already convinced Texas leaders have neglected public education, announcing $40 million days before an election was always going to look less like a rescue plan and more like a very conveniently timed bouquet.

And judging by the reaction online, plenty of Texans are not ready to forget the argument just because someone finally showed up carrying roses.
