Texas Democratic Senate Nominee James Talarico Calls Out the Iran War on Live TV: ‘There’s Always Enough Money to Bomb People’

Texas said what everyone was thinking

There are moments in political television where someone says the quiet part out loud. It doesn’t happen much, but when it does, the internet knows immediately. You can bet history remembers the ones who speak up while everyone else is tiptoeing. Texas just had one of those moments this week. And it wasn’t some old pro, but a brand-new state rep who pulled off one of the biggest political upsets Texas has seen in years.

Texas State Rep. James Talarico: “We’re always told that we don’t have enough money for schools or for health care or for our veterans, but there’s always enough money to bomb people on the other side of the world.”

James Talarico beat U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett in the Texas Democratic Senate primary, and on Monday, he sat down with CBS Mornings for his first big interview since the win. They asked him about the war in Iran, and he didn’t sugarcoat anything.

He skipped the usual political talk and spoke from what he knows growing up in Texas. “As a millennial, I saw how military disasters like the Iraq War robbed this nation of young lives, of billions of dollars, of our moral standing in the world,” he said. “I worry that our current leaders are repeating those same mistakes,” Talarico added.

Talarico then shared a story about his recent trip to San Branch, Texas, a small community south of Dallas, where people still lack running water and even basic sewage. “Every dollar we spend bombing the Middle East,” he said, “is a dollar we’re not spending in San Branch, Texas, or in our communities here at home.”

Then came the line that broke the internet. “We’re always told that we don’t have enough money for schools or for health care or for our veterans,” Talarico said, “but there’s always enough money to bomb people on the other side of the world.”

He said the U.S. can actually back Iran’s democracy movement and stop the country from getting a nuclear weapon. There’s no need to bomb kids or send Americans off to die thousands of miles away. The clip took off online. People jumped into the comments, saying it was the realest thing they had heard on morning TV in ages.

The remarks quickly resonated online, with many viewers saying the message echoed long-standing frustrations about war spending. “Wowzers. A politician actually repeating what the people have been saying since people have been protesting wars,” one person wrote. Another added, “Finally someone that makes sense I just hope he stands on what he says and advocates.”

Some responses were openly supportive. “Preach it brother!” one user commented. Another wrote, “America first, then we help others and enough fn wars already!” Others focused on the broader issue of government priorities. “This financial policy will not change: war financing always comes first. Unfortunately!” one comment read. A few pointed to what they believe those funds could cover instead.“We could literally have free Healthcare for all, tax breaks on middle class, improved education, free college for all with the amount of money they spend on bombing ops,” another person added.

Texas hasn’t elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in ages. Is James Talarico the one to finally break that streak? That’s still up in the air. But after just one CBS Mornings interview and a sharp line linking bombs to school budgets, he is everywhere. No campaign ad could have pulled that off.
