A Texas homeowner claims a man fell through his ceiling during an open house, giving tens of thousands of Reddit users quite the chuckle. Fortunately, the man wasn’t seriously injured, as he allegedly denied having fallen and left without any explanation. His purpose was supposedly to check out the water heater in the attic.
“My realtor was downstairs talking to other potential buyers when she heard an odd noise,” hes_the_Zissou recalled in his post on r/mildlyinfuriating. She went upstairs and discovered the large hole in the ceiling, but the man present “played dumb,” even though he was the only one there. According to hes_the_Zissou, his realtor said the man responded, “I don’t think it was me,” which many Redditors found both hilarious and aggravating.
“Why are American houses made of cardboard?” questioned a commenter. “Why did anyone even let him up there?” asked another. “I get being embarrassed but that’s just so unprofessional to just leave like that,” remarked a third. Many people argued that the realtor should pay for the damage, since she was the one who let the man go, but the homeowner hasn’t commented on how the repairs were paid for.
Online Users Claim Falling Accidents from an Attic Is Not Uncommon
To many, it came as a surprise that this sort of incident happens more often than people think, according to a commenter claiming to be an insurance adjuster. Another person, who said they’re a home inspector, also shared a story about someone who fell through a ceiling after straying too far from the plywood in an attic. “He stepped right into the blown-in insulation and got a fast trip back to the bathroom,” recalled the inspector.
Besides falling through the ceiling, there are plenty of other reasons for non-professionals to be very careful in attics. Simplified Safety states that there are many hazards, such as exposed wiring, nails, and toxic airborne particles.
Although somewhat comical to fall through a ceiling, snooping about an attic untrained is definitely not a safe idea. Luckily, the man at the Texan homeowner’s open house was able to walk out after his fall, but several Redditors feel as though she was at fault and should be fired.
