Texas Ranchers Face Brutal Backlash as Trump Policies Bite: ‘They Got Exactly What He Promised Them’

Texas ranchers struggling with higher costs and increased competition from imported beef might have expected sympathy. Instead, an NBC News report has triggered a furious backlash online, with critics focusing on one uncomfortable contradiction: some of the ranchers complaining about the pressure remain firmly behind President Donald Trump.

The report highlighted concerns including diesel and fertilizer costs and imported beef competing with American cattle. Those concerns are not imaginary. USDA data shows U.S. beef imports during January and February 2026 were 13 percent higher than a year earlier, while imports from Argentina more than doubled. The Trump administration also temporarily expanded the tariff-rate quota for Argentine lean beef by 80,000 metric tons for 2026.

My goodness, people like this are why people don’t feel sorry for farmers and their struggles right now. They voted for Trump. Now they’re being devastated by his policies, and they won’t even admit it.

Yet the political loyalty displayed by the Texas ranchers proved considerably more controversial than their balance sheets.

One rancher identified himself emphatically as a Trump supporter before acknowledging disagreement over importing beef. Another suggested things would work out provided Republicans won the midterms.

A third conceded the trade decision had hurt American ranchers but remained convinced Trump was on their side. That combination sent left-wing Reddit commenters into overdrive.

‘They Got Exactly What He Promised Them’

One of the thread’s most upvoted reactions cut directly to the contradiction critics believed they were watching: “They got exactly what he promised them.”

Another commenter seized on the rancher who compared the disruption to making an omelet, writing: “Sir you are the eggs.”

The anger went well beyond jokes. Commenters repeatedly argued that ranchers could not complain about economic pain linked to administration policies while continuing to support the same political movement. Others predicted that even serious financial pressure would not change how these voters approach the midterms. Those are reactions from the Reddit discussion, not evidence of how Texas ranchers generally intend to vote.

Still, the underlying economic pressure is measurable. USDA says an expanded tariff-free quota for lean beef is expected to increase U.S. imports in late 2026, while cattle prices have fallen from their spring highs.

That makes the politics surrounding the NBC report more combustible. The ranchers interviewed were not denying that particular policies could hurt them. At least some openly acknowledged the damage while separating that criticism from their broader support for Trump.

For their online critics, that distinction is precisely what makes the story so infuriating. The real test comes next. Economic pressure can make voters angry, but anger does not automatically change political allegiance. In this Texas dispute, the striking story is that the ranchers interviewed can dislike what a policy is doing to their industry without necessarily abandoning the politician responsible for it.
