Texas Rep. Brandon Gill Blames ‘Left-Wing Ideology’ for High Rents and Stagnant Wages: ‘The Left Is Not in Charge Right Now, Brandon’

A House hearing video is going viral after Texas Rep. Brandon Gill pressed Thomas Saenz on whether American taxpayers should fund Medicaid and Social Security for people in the country illegally. Saenz avoided giving a direct answer, sparking a tense exchange.

Texas Rep. Brandon Gill blamed “left-wing ideology” and mass migration for economic pressures facing young Americans. He pointed to stagnant wages, high rents, student debt, and difficulty finding work. Gill argued those conditions are pushing some young people toward the DSA.

The remarks appeared in a video shared online.

Gill: There’s something wrong in the country right now. Wages are not keeping up with inflation. Rents are way too high… it's these left wing ideologies that have created the problems in the first place. pic.twitter.com/9wjkPXm4KH

Gill began with the economic frustrations he said young people are confronting. He said wages are failing to keep pace with inflation while rents remain too high.

From there, Gill turned to the DSA and socialism. He said the group presents itself as an answer to those economic problems. Instead, Gill argued that “left-wing ideology” created the problems in the first place.

He then centered his argument on mass migration, calling it one of the biggest factors. Gill said large-scale immigration suppresses wages while driving up rent and housing costs.

Gill carried that argument into employment and healthcare. He claimed immigrants are taking American jobs and making work harder to find.

He also said Americans are subsidizing healthcare for millions of people admitted from other countries. Gill argued consumers ultimately pay those costs through higher insurance and medical bills.

Gill ended by returning to the issue he placed at the center of his argument. “I think that it all does go back to mass migration,” he said.

Brandon Gill’s Economic Claims Draw Pushback Over GOP Control

The sharpest criticism focused on a basic question behind Gill’s argument: who currently holds political power.

One X user challenged the premise directly, writing, “The Republicans hold the presidency, the house, and the senate. And he blames the democrats?”

Another pushed the same point further. “So left wing created the wage and rent problem but you (GOP) have been in charge for almost 2yrs and now admit you can do nothing about it?” the user wrote.

A separate response challenged Gill’s explanation for the economic strain he described. “Funny how Republicans can correctly identify the crisis—wages, inflation, unaffordable housing—and then blame left-wing ideology as if they haven’t spent decades championing tax cuts for the wealthy, corporate power and trickle-down economics.”

Another reduced the disagreement to one line: “The left is not in charge right now, Brandon. #FactsMatter”

The dispute remains centered on who bears responsibility for the economic pressures Gill described. It also leaves competing ideas about what should address them unresolved.
