Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett faced backlash after calling the search of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington home a “fishing expedition.” She questioned why investigators expected to find decades-old citizenship paperwork involving Omar’s deceased father at the property. Her remarks drew criticism from users who challenged her understanding of the federal investigation.
In a video circulating on X, the Democrat questioned the allegations, saying the details remained under seal. She also mentioned hearing that a Democratic-appointed judge approved the search warrant. However, she acknowledged that she had not verified the information and wanted to examine the warrant herself.
Crockett argued that the alleged wrongdoing involved documentation Omar’s father completed when she was a child. She pointed out that Omar lives in Minnesota and occupies the Washington property because of her congressional position. With her father deceased, she questioned how paperwork from decades earlier could have ended up inside the residence.
To explain her concerns, she used a hypothetical search for a body to illustrate the limits of search warrants. She argued that investigators could only search areas where they could reasonably expect to find the specified evidence. Her central question remained what justified searching Omar’s home for documents connected to her childhood.

The discussion shifted toward the investigation’s origins, Omar’s age and the evidence behind the search.
“Then why did Biden’s DOJ start the investigation?” one user questioned. Another challenged Crockett’s description of Omar as a child, writing, “She was not a little girl.”
Others disputed her reasoning about the location of possible evidence. “Because paper moves, duh. Files get boxed up, carried across state lines, and stored in closets,” one response stated. Meanwhile, another questioned her doubts about the warrant, asking, “Pretty sure a federal judge signed off on the warrant, yes?”
The specific evidence supporting the search remains unclear from Crockett’s account. She said she wanted to examine the warrant herself.
