President Trump’s tirade against Tylenol, asserting it causes autism when a mother takes it during pregnancy, has many up in arms. It certainly came out of left field. Senator Roland Gutierrez, from Texas, had a little something to say about the matter and how Trump might not be the right person to approach for scientific advice. In fact, a doctor in New York was quick to point out that Tylenol was the ideal painkiller to take during pregnancy.
“Trump, you’re such a f*****g genius. You solved it. You solved autism,” Senator Roland Gutierrez says at the start of his video. He goes on to explain Tylenol was actually invented in 1955, though the first autism diagnosis was in 1911. This means the connection couldn’t have possibly existed. He then asks Trump, “Are you shilling for Advil today?”
Senator Roland goes on to ask, “What f****d up market manipulation you got going on?” He also quips, “Maybe Tylenol just pissed you off because someone on their board said something about your small hands.” The way President Trump linked the two is not only dangerous for women who may now turn to other means of pain relief during their pregnancy, but also because it’s untrue, according to world health officials.
“As the mother of an adult child on the spectrum I’m appalled!!! I didn’t take any Tylenol,” said one commenter. “You guys really elected a genius at the White House haven’t ya!” another commenter jokes. Another commenter replied with, “Not me. I didn’t vote for this but I’m stuck with the consequences anyway.” Amen to that!
According to NPR, Trump verified Tylenol labeling would now be updated due to his announcement and supposed ‘links.’ These labels would discourage use of acetaminophen during pregnancy. Leucovorin would also be updated to be used as a treatment for autism, which is a form of vitamin B used in cancer treatment. This is an incredibly dangerous rhetoric, as the evidence doesn’t back any of these claims up in any way. And even if you wanted to research for a link, the Trump administration is cutting federal health care funding.
