Texas Sting as Billionaire Beyoncé Gets Dragged for Selling a $948 Empty Box With No Vinyls Included on Her Own Birthday: ‘Coffin for a Hamster’

An empty box!

Beyoncé turned 45 on Friday and gave her fans a present they get to buy: a beautifully crafted, lovingly detailed, completely empty wooden box for nearly a thousand dollars. The internet has been unwrapping it ever since.

The Texas queen’s official store listed the Bey Keeper Collector’s Box on Friday morning, her 45th birthday, as part of the 20th-anniversary celebration of her album B’Day, and the specs arrived with a deadpan disclaimer for the ages: there are “no vinyls included.” The price: $948.01, before shipping and taxes push the total to $1,111.89, per one proud buyer’s posted order confirmation.

To be fair to the box, it is trying. The 18-by-14-inch crate is handcrafted from solid pine, finished with beeswax oil, lined in deep green velvet, and fitted with a faux gator-skin leather carrying strap with gold hardware, each one custom engraved and exclusively numbered out of 500. It was “inspired by the beauty of traditional beekeeper crates,” per the listing, because the Queen B keeps bees on brand, and it exists to “house and display your Beyoncé vinyl collection.” The vinyl, once again and forever, is your problem.

The price is not random, either. $948.01 spells out September 4, 1981, her birthdate, the same digits she immortalized in the spoken intro of B’Day’s “Get Me Bodied.” The box dropped on the birthday it is priced after, celebrating the birthday album, which is either exquisite brand architecture or a very expensive inside joke, depending on which side of the discourse you land.

The Grammy winner, who reached billionaire status last year per Forbes, has not commented on the reaction, because product listings do not require commentary. Her fans, on the other hand, required plenty, and split into camps within hours.

The Hive Divides Over the Hive Box

The drag came fast and funny, aimed less at the box than at the math. “A band and I can’t even get real gator on the strap?” one user tweeted, while another compared the crate to a “coffin for a hamster” and a third scoffed at the craftsmanship math: “You can easily make this for maybe $30.” The defense answered in equal force and with total serenity, from the investment case, “It’s called memorabilia, which will be worth way more when she’s no longer here. Especially since only 500 were made,” to the shrug: “It’s obviously not for people who can’t afford it.” The sovereign-consumer case arrived with receipts, literally: one buyer posted his $1,111.89 order confirmation, captioned “Idk bout y’all, but i’ma do WHAT I WANT!” And the Lil Kim loyalists checked in from music history: “I only recognize one Queen Bee.” A third faction is convinced the empty box is not empty at all, floating theories of hidden Easter eggs inside.

Five hundred boxes, one birthday-coded price tag, and a fan base at war over woodworking: the discourse, like the crate, is handcrafted and holds nothing. Somewhere, the Queen B is 45, a billionaire, and almost certainly sold out by Monday.
