A Texas woman stumbled upon a bizarre sight on her local street, a large spiral formation made entirely of worms. Measuring roughly 20 inches across, the circle had a dense concentration of worms along the outer rings while the center remained eerily empty.

Shocked and somewhat disturbed by the unusual scene, she recorded a video of the phenomenon and shared it on TikTok, where it quickly went viral, attracting more than 500,000 views and nearly 90,000 likes. The strange display has since caught the attention of Reddit users, sparking discussions about the science and creep factor behind the “worm vortex.”

The video first appeared on the woman’s TikTok account, quickly spreading across social media platforms because of its odd and unsettling visual. While Reddit has also picked up the clip, its reach there remains smaller, likely due to the video’s recent upload. The footage resonated with viewers immediately, with users expressing a mixture of disgust, fascination, and dark humor in the comments section.

In the video, the woman zooms in on the worms, which appear rigid and lifeless, with a reddish tint in certain parts of their bodies. At first glance, they could almost be mistaken for sticks, but closer inspection reveals that these were indeed dead worms arranged in a tight, circular pattern. The spiral formation gives the appearance of movement frozen in time, which some viewers found both mesmerizing and disturbing.

Internet Freaks Over Texas Worm Spiral

Several viewers drew comparisons to horror fiction, particularly the manga series Uzumaki by Junji Ito, in which a small town is haunted by a mysterious spiral phenomenon. Many internet users joked that the worm circle resembled a scene straight out of the story. Others quickly sought scientific explanations, pointing to a phenomenon known as a “death spiral.” One Reddit user commented:

“Death circle, happens when they lose their own pheromone trail they were following, and then instead choosing to follow the one in front of them making a slow march to their death. Observed in ants and caterpillars as well.”

Some users speculated that the worms were fungus gnat larvae. These larvae are known to move in tight, sticky masses to conserve moisture and appear larger to potential predators. The circular formations are typically accidental, resulting from a chemical trail that turns into an endless loop, especially on wet pavement. While the exact species in the Texas video has not been confirmed, the explanation seemed plausible to many observers.

The video’s popularity stems from its unusual and eerie nature, as well as the rarity of seeing such a phenomenon in everyday life. While the “death spiral” effect has been observed in nature, encountering it firsthand on a street is uncommon, making it a captivating clip for social media. Viewers were drawn to the combination of creepiness, curiosity, and the visual oddity of a perfectly formed worm vortex. Even if harmless, the Texas woman’s discovery shows just how much fascination a simple natural phenomenon can spark online.
