Texas is just one of many states being affected by the possible SNAP benefit cuts if the government shutdown continues. And at this point, it seems likely that it will continue. Approximately 3.5 million people rely on SNAP benefits in Texas and 1.7 million of these are children. A woman in Texas is speaking out because so many families are going to be suffering. As she says, “In November at the grocery stores, MIND YOUR BUSINESS!!!”
Brandy (@brandya2000 on TikTok) posted a video talking about how the shutdown and SNAP cuts are affecting everyone. As she says, the best thing that people can do for others is to mind their own business. What she means by this is that, if someone is walking out of the store without paying for their food because their benefits were cut, people shouldn’t say anything. Brandy says, “I need you not to record nothing. I need you to mind your business. I need you to let these people feed their families.”
Brandy wanted to reiterate in her video who it actually hurts when somebody steals food from a company like Walmart. She said it’s not the “billion-dollar companies” who suffer. Instead, it’s the people who can’t bring formula and food home to their children and families. She said they’re literally just “trying to feed their families” and nobody needs to interfere with that. She goes on to say that the owners of these companies never struggle to figure out how they’re going to put food on their table. They don’t have to think about anything, while so many families are now struggling to survive.
Some commenters took Brandy’s side on this issue, while others disagreed with her mindset. One person quipped, “If they have a MAGA or Trump hat on, I’m screaming at the top of my lungs” in reference to somebody stealing food. Another person asked, “So stealing is OK now? I understand you have to feed your family but why compromise your morals and values? How is that possible? Try a food bank, friends, neighbors, families, churches, something. I’ll be praying for all of you.”
Unfortunately, so many people in Texas and beyond don’t have access to the luxury of asking for help. And if she wants to talk morals and values, it’s important to note that the morally corrupt government is who put people in this dire situation. Sometimes, you have to just let people survive and mind your own business, just like Brandy said.
