For those who enjoy watching adult-themed cartoons on television, you are sure to have seen the animated series, Rick and Morty. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon created the American science fiction sitcom, and since the first episode aired on December 2, 2013, it has grown significantly in popularity.
The first-ever episode of Rick and Morty was a pilot and attracted an audience of 1.1 million people in the United States. These figures went up steadily throughout the first series of the show, eventually climbing to 2.13 million viewers for the final episode of the series, titled “Ricksy Business”.
Interestingly, even throughout the first series, there was a range of different people, both in the writing and directing department. In fact, co-creator Roiland directed just one of the episodes in the first series, but then he is responsible for the voices of both Rick and Morty, so that’s understandable. In terms of directors, John Rice, Jeff Myers, Bryan Newton, Stephen Sandoval, all directed at least one episode each in the first series of Rick and Morty. The writers included both creators plus Eric Acosta, Wade Randolph, Tom Kauffman, Ryan Ridley, and Mike McMahan.
Moving to the second series and the viewing figures remained around the same level, with a peak of 2.19 million people tuning in for the episode “Mortynight Run”, which was directed by Dominic Polcino and written by David Phillips. Juan Meza-León, Dan Guterman, and Alex Rubens joined the writing and directing team for the second series.
The third series of Rick and Morty started with an unannounced episode on April 1, 2017. As a result, the viewing figures were down to just 0.68 million people. However, this soon jumped up to 2.86 million people for the second episode in the series, which was the biggest audience in the history of the show. The viewing figures remained well over 2 million people for each of the eight remaining episodes in the third series, and therefore it was no surprise to see Rick and Morty return for a fourth series towards the end of 2019.
“Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat” was the first episode of the fourth series, and again there was a new name in the director’s chair as Erica Hayes directed that episode. 2.33 million people tuned in on November 10, 2019, and names working on episodes in the fourth series include Jacob Hair, Anthony Chun, Caitie Delaney, Jeff Loveness, and James Siciliano. It is worth remembering that all of these viewing figures are just for people living in the United States and does not cover those who have been watching in other countries around the world. Therefore, the overall figures are sure to be much higher

If you can drag yourself away from the Rick and Morty slot, we will now take a look at some of the best episodes in the history of the show. It is difficult to know where to begin, but one genuine highlight is when Rick turns himself into a pickle in season 3, episode 3, which is called “Pickle Rick.” Rick is supposed to be going to therapy, but he is willing to do anything it takes to avoid having to go, and that includes turning itself into a pickle. Of course, he has made an antidote that is ready for him to take, but Beth finds it and takes it herself, meaning Rick is trapped as a pickle. However, on her way out, Beth knocks Rick into the sewer, where he goes about creating a robotic body out of rat corpses. If you know anything about action films, you will also enjoy this episode.
Remaining in season 3, we move on to episode 7, which is called “The Ricklantis Mixup” This episode is rather different from any of the previous shows in that it is made up of five short vignettes. Each of these looks at an interdimensional society in which there are thousands of Ricks and Mortys from different realities. They are all doing different tasks and jobs, such as running for office and being crooked cops. In true Rick and Morty style, they even get turned into edible wafers. As with many of the episodes of Ricky and Morty, there is a deeper meaning to the story, and in this case, it highlighted topics such as police brutality and political corruption. There were many different characters in this episode. Still, interestingly, Justin Roiland voiced almost every line, which is a no mean feat considering just how lines there are throughout the episode.
Utter the name ‘Mr. Poopybutthole’ and fans of the show will immediately refer you to season 2, episode 4. This was called “Total Rickall” and in a classic sci-fi twist, as the family is reminiscing, alien parasites reproduce and become part of their memories. These memories take the form of strange characters, which include Frankenstein’s monster, Tinkles the Fairy Lamb, a talking pencil named Pencilvester, and Mr. Poopybutthole. It sounds crazy, but things get even worse when the family begins realizing who is a real memory and who is a parasite. That is when the action begins.
Next, we return to the first season of the show and an episode entitled “Rick Potion #9”. This was the 6th episode in the first series, and Morty is about to attend a school dance. Of course, he wants to get the attention of a girl at the dance and needs help from Rick to achieve his goal. So, Morty asks him if he will make him a love serum, which will work on Jessica at the dance. However, unbeknown to the duo, Jessica has the flu, and this mixes with the love serum to make the whole population become obsessed with Morty and not in a good way. After several failed attempts, Rick manages to create an antidote, but it comes with a price for Morty. Although the show tends to jump from one episode to the next without a great deal of link between them, this episode highlights the long term impact of their adventures but is done so in a funny way.
Now we come to the final choice in our list of the best Rick and Morty episodes. “Mortynight Run” was the second episode in the second series and had the highest viewer ratings for that series. In summary, Morty helps a wanted gas cloud escape, but in doing so, he gets several people killed. Morty believes that is the price that had to be paid to save the gas cloud, which was going to be assassinated by Rick as part of an arms deal. However, as is usually the case, the consequences are very troubling for Morty. Yet again, the creators manage to do this in a hilarious way, but there is a big twist in the show, and it will leave you in shock as you watch on in disbelief. This episode seems to sum up Rick and Morty perfectly, and that is why so many people rank it as being the best episode of the show to date.
