A New Jersey woman had the perfect first date with a man who labeled himself as “progressive,” aligning himself with her political beliefs. Imagine her shock when she found out that the man had actually voted for Trump.
The less-than-stellar ending to an otherwise “great first date” was posted on TikTok by Marissa Brignola. In the clip’s description, she detailed that she had asked her then-potential date if he was a republican. He answered, according to her, “You don’t have to worry, I’m not your typical maga hat wearing southern New Jersey type of guy.”
After a good time with a self-declared progressive man, Marissa got in his car. That’s when things started to unravel for the worst, as she discovered the man she dated had voted for Trump. She, however, had to almost squeeze the truth out of him, who insisted on being cryptic and acted nervous about it.
“Yes, I did vote for one specific person recently, and I understand that makes you uncomfortable…” the man said. The New Jersey woman, however, interjected, “Wait, why are you beating around the bush?” The man then stumbled on his words, saying, “I voted, I did, I did, I did.”
A Lying Man, Confronted
Marissa then confronted the man for lying to her, as he had previously said he hadn’t voted for Trump in 2024. For some reason, the man thought that saying that he was “horribly embarrassed and intimidated” by Marissa explained his deception.
“I’m embarrassed to…” the man continued, before an extremely long pause, making the awkwardness almost palpable. Marissa broke the silence, saying, “That was like, really weird.”
Her date, shockingly, called her intimidating once again, saying that she was “very, very intelligent.” This made her laugh, evidently by the sheer amount of nonsense she was hearing coming from this New Jersey man’s mouth.
“You must be in cahoots with the other Trumpies of the world, because there are other women that are equally as intelligent or maybe in touch as me,” she told him, as shown in a follow-up video. Marissa then asked him to drive her home, putting an end to the date. She then wrote in the video description, “I am done dating.”
Many applauded her in the comments, getting behind her for standing her ground. One user said, “They don’t regret their vote, they regret that it’s negatively affecting their dating life.” Another one wrote, “I love how terrified he is of you.” A third one added, “I divorced my husband for his vote for Trump.”
If you’re gonna date, perhaps being honest from the get-go is the best way to ensure no party ends up feeling uncomfortable, especially if political beliefs are a dealbreaker. Lying about them to go out with someone? Reddest flag there is.
