We’ve officially entered the breakup stage of The Golden Bachelor. Just a year and a half after meeting on the set of the reality series and three months after marrying in a televised ceremony, Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist have announced that they are getting a divorce. “Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we’ve looked closely at our situation, our living situation … We’ve come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to dissolve our marriage,” Turner said on ABC News, surprising no one.
The low success rate among The Bachelor couples is well-documented. Although couples like Ryan and Trista Sutter and Sean and Catherine Lowe are still happily married with children, among others, the vast majority of Bachelor relationships end in heartbreak. It seems The Golden Bachelor is no exception.
The Golden Bachelor Relationship Seemed Rocky Beforehand
Like with many relationships that end, there were warning signs pointing to the dissolution of Turner and Nist’s marriage. Just before their divorce announcement, it was reported that the two were still living apart. Turner had remained in Indiana and Nist was still in New Jersey. Sources claimed that The Golden Bachelor and his wife were simply deciding where to make their home base, seriously considering South Carolina, but fans knew better.
The couple claimed in their ABC interview to still be deeply in love and supportive of the other’s future, chalking up the demise of their relationship to logistics. And the couple doesn’t want others to lose hope. “We say, ‘Don’t give up.’ We say, ‘Stay in it, stay hopeful,’ because we are,” Nist said is their message to those still looking for love. Hopefully the next Golden Bachelor contestants have a more successful love story.
