The Last of Us Part II was first announced at the PlayStation experience all the way back in December 2016. It doesn’t seem like a long time ago and it’s not when compared to some other games, but fans of Naughty Dog’s brilliant first game have been waiting patiently since then for the game to release, or at least get an idea of the release date.
Well, it looks like we finally have a release window of February 2020. I can’t call this a release date yet as nothing is official when we get official confirmation we shall bring it to you. The February date was “announced” by Ellie actress Ashley Johnson during an interview with the good folks over at Critical Role. Hop over and take a look at the video for yourselves here (I would skip to about the 1:07:00 mark).
For those who didn’t listen to the clip, Johnson was asked when The Last of Us Part II would release. She replied, “I think it’s coming out Feb…” before being interrupted. She never brought her point back up, indicating that she caught her slip up before she totally revealed the date. It seems clear that Johnson wasn’t supposed to say what she did and that makes the whole February date feel a lot more genuine. Of course, that could have just been the planned date, things could change and The Last of us Part II could easily be pushed back to later in the year. I honestly couldn’t see it coming this year with the releases of both Shenmue 3 and Death Stranding due before the year is out. It would make plenty of sense to stagger the release windows of such huge games in order to maximize sales. As well as profits.
Let’s not forget that the PlayStation 5 is also rumored to release at some point in 2020 with The Last of us Part II rumored to come out as an early remaster for the new Sony machine. Surely, Sony would want to see it on the outgoing hardware sooner rather than later.
Here’s hoping we get a proper release date soon and we get to see what the next part of the adventure brings. For the time being, we must wait as patiently as we can.
