According to a tweet from Games Journalist Tom Henderson, the PS5 remake of the first The Last of Us game is nearly complete and might release in late 2022. Check out the full tweet below.

The news of a remastered PS5 version of The Last of Us releasing this year is huge, as the project has not even been officially announced by Sony. In April 2021, Bloomberg reported that a PS5 remake was under production. The tech news outlet reported that the game was initially being developed by PlayStation Visual Arts Service Group, but was then given to another developer. Recent reports say that game developer Naughty Dog is leading the project after having completed The Last of Us Part 2. As a bit of a tease, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann revealed the studio was “dying to share multiple game projects” with fans.
Additionally, according to Henderson, Naughty Dog is currently working on its “first standalone multiplayer game,” as well as a The Last of Us Part 2 Director’s Cut. It seems that plenty of fun things are in the works for The Last of Us fans.
Let’s not forget The Last of Us HBO TV series that is also in production with PlayStation Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The upcoming post-apocalyptic drama is based on the first game. The series will star Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian) as Joel and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) as Ellie. Joel is a smuggler tasked with escorting teenage Ellie across a post-apocalyptic U.S. There is no exact release date on The Last of Us series, but it is set to debut this year. It’s definitely an exciting project as it is reportedly the largest television production in Canadian history, as well as the first HBO series based on a video game.
With a The Last of Us remake for PS5, a potential director’s cut edition for Part 2, and a new TV series coming out, 2022 will be a good year to be a fan of the franchise.
